PART 12 – The Son Michael Never Mentioned Was the Missing Link Between Adam, Peter, and Me, and the DNA Result Rebecca Ordered Destroyed the One Family Story Everyone Had Still Been Clinging To

My mother did not want to continue.

For the first time that night, I almost let her stop.

Then she said, “His name was Michael Anthony Carter.”

I looked at Claire.

Claire looked at me.

Daniel leaned toward the phone.

“Michael had a son?”

Anne answered quietly.

“Before we met.”

“With whom?”

“I don’t know.”

“You knew about him?”

“Only pieces.”

“How old would he be?”

She calculated.

“Fifty-three.”

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

“What?”

“If Eleanor carried him as a newborn in 1973, he’d be fifty-three now.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad would have been what? Twelve?”

Anne was silent.

Rebecca Sterling said, “Then the child was not Michael Carter’s son.”

Anne whispered, “That is what Michael believed.”

I stared.

“What?”

“He believed the baby was his brother.”

Nobody spoke.

Again.

Another brother.

Another child labeled incorrectly.

Another name hiding another relationship.

“Why call him Michael?”

“Family tradition.”

I laughed without humor.

“Apparently identity theft was too.”

Claire reached for my hand.

This time I took hers.

Anne continued.

“Eleanor told Michael years later that the baby was their father’s child.”

I looked at Rebecca.

“So Dad’s half brother.”

“Yes.”

“Who was the mother?”

Anne hesitated.

“Louise Mercer.”

Marlene stood so quickly the chair tipped.

“My grandmother?”

Anne whispered, “That was the name Eleanor gave Michael.”

Marlene stared.

“My grandmother had a child with Michael’s father.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“1973.”

Marlene shook her head.

“She would have been forty-six.”

“Possible,” Rebecca Sterling said.

Marlene looked at her.

“I know it’s possible.”

Rebecca nodded.

Marlene sat down again.

“So the Mercer and Carter families had another child.”

Daniel whispered, “And Eleanor moved him.”

Claire asked, “Where?”

Anne answered.

“To Sloan.”

Rebecca Sterling’s eyes sharpened.

“Name after transfer?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel slowly stood.

“No.”

“What?”

He looked at me.

Then at Claire.

Then toward Rebecca’s laptop where Laura’s call had ended.

“Peter had a younger brother.”

Rebecca said, “Name?”

“Anthony.”

My stomach tightened.

Michael Anthony Carter.

Anthony Sloan.

“Age?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Fifty-three.”

Nobody moved.

I stared at him.

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“When did you last see him?”

“Twenty-five years ago.”

“What happened?”

“He left.”

“Like everyone else.”

Daniel ignored that.

“Peter said Anthony wanted nothing to do with Mercer.”

Rebecca Sterling asked, “Did Anthony have children?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

Marlene whispered, “You do.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“You told me once Peter’s brother had a boy.”

Daniel stared.

“I forgot.”

“You forget everything that becomes inconvenient.”

He closed his eyes.

Claire said, “Mom.”

“No.”

Marlene’s anger finally arrived fully.

“Every man in this story has forgotten a child.”

Daniel looked at her.

She continued.

“Dead. Missing. Transferred. Hidden. Misnamed. Every time, some man says he did not know enough.”

Daniel did not defend himself.

Good.

Rebecca Sterling asked Anne, “Did Michael ever meet Anthony Sloan?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“2005.”

The room changed again.

“The Mercer night?”

“Yes.”

I stood.

“Anthony was there?”

“Michael told me someone came after the fight with Adam.”

“Who?”

“He didn’t know at first.”

“But later?”

“Yes.”

“He learned it was Anthony.”

Daniel stared.

“Peter’s brother came to Mercer.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Peter called him.”

Rebecca Sterling asked, “To move Adam?”

Anne whispered, “Maybe.”

I closed my eyes.

Peter changed Adam’s exit log.

Peter moved Adam to Rebecca Sloan.

Rebecca hid him for three days.

Then transport took him to Canada.

Anthony may have been the transporter.

I asked, “Did Dad think Anthony helped Adam?”

“Yes.”

“Did he ever find him afterward?”

“No.”

Claire frowned.

“But if Anthony was Dad’s half brother, why would he help Adam?”

Rebecca Sterling answered.

“Because Adam was also a Carter by birth.”

I looked at her.

“So they were family.”

“Biologically, yes.”

Daniel whispered, “And Mercer made them strangers.”

The sentence sat heavily.

Rebecca opened her laptop again.

“We need to stop relying on family recollection.”

I almost laughed.

“That would have been useful ten hours ago.”

“I agree.”

“What do you suggest?”

“DNA.”

Claire looked at her.

“From whom?”

“Anyone we can obtain lawfully and voluntarily.”

Daniel said, “Me.”

Marlene looked at him.

Rebecca nodded.

“Useful.”

Claire asked, “Evan?”

“Yes.”

I hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

“Laura?”

“Ask.”

“Thomas?”

“Ask.”

“Anne?”

My mother answered through the phone.

“Yes.”

Rebecca continued.

“If we can locate Anthony Sloan, Samuel Carter, Adam Renner, or preserved biological samples associated with Peter, Michael, Eleanor, Raymond Bennett, or the Vale line, we can begin separating documented relationships from assigned ones.”

Claire looked down at Luca.

“No.”

Rebecca followed her gaze.

“I wasn’t going to ask.”

“Good.”

“Luca is not necessary.”

Claire’s shoulders relaxed slightly.

Rebecca continued.

“We may already have something faster.”

“What?”

“Hospital archives.”

Daniel frowned.

“St. Matthew’s?”

“Yes.”

“Those records are ancient.”

“Some pathology departments retain samples far longer than expected.”

Anne whispered, “Michael had surgery there.”

I looked at her phone.

“When?”

“1999.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Potential tissue block.”

“Can you access it?”

“With proper consent or court process.”

Anne said, “I consent if I can.”

Rebecca made a note.

Daniel said, “Peter had surgery too.”

“Where?”

“Same hospital.”

“When?”

“2001.”

Rebecca looked at me.

“That may help.”

Claire asked, “Wouldn’t this take days?”

“Normally.”

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number again.

I stared.

One message.

YOU DO NOT NEED DAYS.

Below it was a file attachment.

Rebecca said, “Don’t open it.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Forward it to me.”

I did.

She opened it inside a secure viewer.

A PDF.

Laboratory report.

Private genetic testing.

Dated eleven years earlier.

Subjects identified only by initials.

M.C.

P.S.

A.R.

E.C.

Rebecca stared.

“What?”

She did not answer.

“Rebecca.”

She zoomed in.

Daniel moved closer.

Claire said, “Read it.”

Rebecca looked at me.

“The report compares Michael Carter, Peter Sloan, Adam Renner, and Evan Carter.”

My mouth went dry.

“Who ordered it?”

“No name.”

“Results?”

Rebecca read silently.

Then her face changed.

Claire noticed first.

“What?”

Rebecca looked at me.

“Michael Carter is not your biological father.”

“I know.”

“Peter Sloan is not your biological father either.”

I stared.

Anne said, “What?”

I felt strangely relieved.

For about one second.

Then Rebecca continued.

“Adam Renner is listed as having a first-degree relationship to you.”

Daniel frowned.

“Brother?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“Could be parent-child or full sibling depending on ages and markers.”

I laughed.

“He’s sixteen years older.”

“Then parent-child is more likely.”

The room went silent.

I stared at the report.

“No.”

Claire tightened her grip on my hand.

Rebecca said, “This is an old private test. We need independent confirmation.”

I heard the words.

They did not help.

“Adam was sixteen when I was born?”

Daniel calculated.

“Seventeen.”

“Still.”

Rebecca nodded.

“It is biologically possible.”

Anne began crying.

“Michael never said—”

I turned toward her phone.

“Did he know?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did he know?”

Her crying grew louder.

“I don’t know.”

Rebecca scanned the report.

“There’s another note.”

“What?”

She read.

“Sample E.C. maternal relationship confirmed A.C.”

Anne Carter.

My mother.

That part held.

I breathed.

Barely.

“So Mom is my mother.”

“Yes.”

“And Adam may be my biological father.”

“Yes.”

Claire whispered, “Evan.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Dad found Adam in Mercer and learned he was his stolen brother.”

“Yes.”

“And Adam may already have been my biological father.”

Daniel looked sick.

“If the report is accurate.”

I laughed softly.

“This family has found a new way to be impossible.”

Rebecca Sterling said, “There is one more relationship.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Peter Sloan and Adam Renner are also first-degree relatives.”

Daniel frowned.

“That could mean brothers.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Or parent-child.”

I stared.

“What age difference?”

Daniel answered.

“Peter was about seventeen years older.”

My skin tightened.

Claire understood.

“Peter may have been Adam’s biological father.”

Nobody moved.

Rebecca looked again.

“If so, and Adam is Evan’s father, then Peter is Evan’s grandfather.”

Anne whispered, “But Peter was born Renner.”

“Yes.”

Daniel sat down.

“Which means Adam was raised as Charles Renner’s son while possibly being Peter Sloan’s son, even though Peter himself had been born into the Renner line and reassigned to Sloan.”

Claire whispered, “They folded the bloodlines back together.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Repeatedly.”

I felt nauseated.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Control.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“Maybe more than that.”

“What?”

“Closed networks create predictable inheritance.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“Say it plainly.”

Rebecca did.

“If the founders repeatedly reassigned children while keeping biological lines within a small group of families, they may have been preserving ownership while disguising blood relationships.”

I stared.

“Breeding heirs.”

Daniel flinched.

Rebecca did not.

“Possibly.”

Claire said, “No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“No child is an heir to this.”

Rebecca nodded.

“I agree.”

Claire looked at me.

“So do you.”

“I do.”

“No matter what that report says.”

“I know.”

She held my eyes.

“Say it.”

I looked at Luca.

Then at her.

“No document decides who he is.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

My phone buzzed again.

Same unknown number.

Another file.

This time Rebecca opened it immediately.

A scanned letter.

Michael’s handwriting.

I recognized it.

The date was four months before his death.

The first line read:

ANNE, IF EVAN EVER LEARNS WHAT MERCER DID, TELL HIM I SHOULD HAVE TOLD HIM SOONER.

My mother started crying harder.

I read on.

I KNOW ADAM IS HIS BIOLOGICAL FATHER.

The words blurred.

Claire’s grip tightened around my hand.

I forced myself to continue.

ADAM DID NOT KNOW UNTIL 2005.

NEITHER DID I.

THE RECORDS SHOW ANNE WAS SEDATED DURING A PROCEDURE AFTER A PREGNANCY COMPLICATION. MERCER USED STORED MATERIAL WITHOUT HER KNOWLEDGE.

I stopped.

The room vanished.

Anne made a broken sound.

“No.”

Rebecca Sterling took the phone from me gently and read.

Daniel covered his face.

Claire whispered, “They used stored material.”

I looked at my mother’s phone.

“Mom?”

She was crying.

“I didn’t know.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t know.”

“I know.”

Rebecca continued reading.

ADAM WAS SEVENTEEN. HE HAD PROVIDED A SAMPLE DURING A MEDICAL SCREENING CONNECTED TO MERCER. NEITHER OF THEM CONSENTED TO ITS USE.

Claire closed her eyes.

My stomach turned.

Not an affair.

Not a hidden romance.

Not one more family lie in the ordinary sense.

A violation.

Of both of them.

Rebecca read the next lines.

PETER FOUND THE PROCEDURE RECORD. THAT IS WHY ADAM WANTED THE BLUE BOOK. THAT IS WHY I FOUGHT HIM. I THOUGHT HE WAS TRYING TO CLAIM EVAN. I DID NOT KNOW HE HAD JUST LEARNED THE SAME THING I HAD.

Daniel whispered, “Michael thought Adam came for Evan.”

“Yes.”

“But Adam came for proof.”

Rebecca nodded.

I stared at nothing.

Dad had fought his own stolen brother because both had been manipulated by records neither understood.

Rebecca read on.

I LOCKED HIM IN THE LOWER ARCHIVE BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID HE WOULD TAKE THE BOOK AND EXPOSE ANNE AND EVAN.

My throat tightened.

I said, “Keep going.”

She did.

WHEN I LEARNED HE WAS MY BROTHER, I WENT BACK. PETER HAD ALREADY MOVED HIM.

Anne whispered, “Michael.”

Rebecca continued.

I SPENT YEARS TRYING TO FIND ADAM. I FOUND EVIDENCE HE WAS ALIVE IN 2009. THOMAS HELPED ME TRACE THE TRANSFER NETWORK.

Thomas.

So that part was true.

Then came the final paragraph.

I NEVER TOLD EVAN BECAUSE I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN THAT HIS BIOLOGICAL FATHER WAS A BOY WHOSE BODY HAD BEEN USED WITHOUT CONSENT, THAT I HAD LOCKED THAT BOY IN A ROOM, AND THAT THE BOY WAS ALSO MY BROTHER.

No one spoke.

Rebecca read the last sentence.

I CALLED IT PROTECTION BECAUSE COWARDICE SOUNDED WORSE.

My eyes filled.

I hated him for the lie.

I understood it.

Those were not opposites.

Claire leaned her head against my shoulder.

For a while, that was enough.

Then Rebecca Sterling scrolled to the file metadata.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

“This scan was created yesterday.”

Daniel looked up.

“By whom?”

“The sender removed identifying metadata.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Who is this?”

A man spoke.

Older.

Tired.

Not Charles.

Not Thomas.

Not anyone I knew.

But Daniel stood the instant he heard him.

His face emptied.

“Adam.”

The man on the phone went silent.

I stopped breathing.

Then he said:

“Hello, Evan.”
