Part7: “Yes, Ivan,” I said, picking up the false folder. …

Part 12

The apartment went silent.

Even the rain outside seemed farther away now.

I stared at Iván through blurred vision while Helena watched us both like someone observing an experiment finally reaching its conclusion.

“Did you ever love me?”

His mouth opened.

Closed.

For once in his life, he couldn’t find the correct version of himself fast enough.

And somehow…
that hurt more than if he had simply lied.

Helena smiled faintly.

“Love is such a dangerous word,” she murmured.

“Shut up,” Iván snapped.

Instantly the room changed.

Because Helena’s expression hardened with terrifying calm.

Not offended.

Warned.

“You forget yourself,” she said quietly.

Iván froze.

And suddenly I understood the truth about him completely:

He was never powerful.

He was useful.

That’s why he always needed control over someone weaker.
Because someone stronger always owned him.

Helena looked back at me.

“You still have time to end this cleanly, Daniela.”

I wiped my face slowly.

“No.”

Her eyes cooled instantly.

“That answer sounds brave now. It won’t later.”

Then she reached down beside the chair and lifted a folder into view.

Blue.

My breath caught.

The missing file from the sewing room.

“Oh God…”

Helena nodded gently.

“Yes. The original archive.”

Inside that folder were names, transactions, judges, doctors, properties… enough to destroy careers and expose an entire machine built on vulnerable people.

And now it was in her hands again.

Arroyo lifted his head weakly.

“Daniela… don’t…”

Helena placed one hand softly on his shoulder.

“Your loyalty to her mother has become exhausting.”

Then she looked at me again.

“Here is what will happen now.”

Her tone became clinical.

Cold.

“You will surrender every copy of every file. You will sign a confidentiality agreement arranged by Villareal’s office. You will finalize your divorce quietly. And afterward…”

She tilted her head sympathetically.

“…you may keep the house.”

The house.

Even now they thought my silence could be bought through property.

I laughed suddenly.

A broken laugh.

Helena’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“You think this is about real estate?”

My voice shook now, but not from fear.

“My mother died trying to stop you.”

Helena answered calmly:

“Your mother died because she mistook morality for strategy.”

The cruelty of that sentence stunned even Iván.

I saw it in his face.

Because unlike Helena…
he still needed to believe he wasn’t completely monstrous.

Then Arroyo suddenly spoke through swollen lips.

“Daniela…”

His voice cracked painfully.

“The backup…”

Helena’s hand tightened on his shoulder instantly.

But too late.

Backup.

My pulse jumped.

Helena realized it immediately too.

Her eyes sharpened toward him.

“You sentimental old fool.”

Then toward me.

“Where is it?”

I stared back silently.

Because I had no idea what he meant.

Helena studied my face carefully.

Then something unexpected happened.

She believed me.

“You don’t know,” she whispered.

For the first time all night…

she looked worried.

Real worry.

And that tiny crack in her composure changed everything.

Iván noticed too.

“So there IS another copy,” he breathed.

Helena turned on him instantly.

“You were supposed to find it before this escalated.”

“I tried!”

“No,” she replied coldly.
“You got emotionally involved.”

The room froze.

Emotionally involved.

Not in love.

Never that simple.

But something close enough to become weakness.

Iván looked at me then with an expression I had never seen before.

Not manipulation.

Not seduction.

Regret.

Real regret.

And somehow that was almost unbearable.

Because if he had been fully evil, healing would’ve been easier.

But damaged people are harder to bury emotionally than monsters.

Helena’s phone suddenly rang somewhere offscreen.

She answered immediately.

Listened.

And all color disappeared from her face.

“What?”

She stepped away from camera.

For the first time, her perfect composure cracked completely.

“No,” she whispered sharply.
“How many?”

My heart began pounding.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Helena turned back toward the screen slowly.

And now…
for the first time…

she looked afraid.

Then the video feed abruptly cut to black.

The apartment fell silent.

Nobody moved.

Then my laptop chimed once.

A new email appeared automatically on screen.

NO SENDER.

NO SUBJECT.

Attached:

“FOR DANIELA — FROM YOUR MOTHER”

My hands started shaking violently.

Below it was one single line of text:

“He finally chose you instead of them.”

Part 13

Nobody spoke.

The email glowed on the laptop screen like something alive.

FOR DANIELA — FROM YOUR MOTHER

And underneath:

“He finally chose you instead of them.”

I looked slowly toward Iván.

His face had gone completely white.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

My pulse exploded.

“You know what this is.”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Which was answer enough.

“Iván.”

His throat moved once before he finally whispered:

“I never found this file.”

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Tighter.

Like all the oxygen had been replaced with memory.

My hand trembled over the trackpad.

Lucía’s voice echoed faintly from my abandoned phone on the kitchen floor. She was still trying to call back.

But everything else disappeared.

Only the screen existed now.

I clicked the attachment.

A video opened instantly.

Static flickered.

Then my mother appeared again.

But this recording was different.

Not hospital lighting.

Not weak.

She sat inside her sewing room wearing her white coat, hair perfectly arranged, gardenias beside her in a small glass jar.

Alive.

Strong.

Prepared.

The timestamp showed it was recorded almost a year before she died.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Dani,
if you’re watching this, then something happened earlier than I hoped.”

My throat tightened painfully.

“I need you to listen without interrupting the screen like you always do when you’re emotional.”

Despite everything, a broken sound escaped me.
Almost a laugh.

She knew me that well.

Behind me, I heard Iván inhale shakily.

My mother continued:

“There are things I never told you because I wanted you to have at least a few years of loving someone without suspicion.”

My stomach twisted.

No…

Her eyes softened.

“That was my mistake.”

The room went silent except for rain hitting the windows.

Then she said the sentence that changed everything:

“I knew who Iván was before you married him.”

I stopped breathing.

Beside me, Iván closed his eyes.

Oh my God.

My mother continued calmly:

“Not completely. Not the full truth. But enough.”

The world tilted sideways.

“You have to understand something difficult now, Daniela:
evil rarely arrives looking evil.”

Her gaze lowered briefly.

“It arrives helpful.
Attentive.
Charming.
Hungry to belong.”

Tears blurred my vision instantly.

“I thought I could manage him,” she admitted quietly.
“I thought proximity would let me control the damage.”

No.

No no—

She knew.

She knew and still let me marry him.

Pain exploded through my chest so violently I physically doubled over.

My mother’s eyes filled with tears too.

“That is the guilt I will carry into death.”

I covered my mouth, sobbing silently.

Behind me, I heard Iván whisper:

“She shouldn’t have told you this…”

But my mother continued.

“Your uncle introduced him through business contacts. By then, I already suspected financial irregularities connected to Villareal’s network.”

She paused.

“And then you fell in love with him.”

Her voice broke slightly there.

The first crack in her composure.

“I wanted to stop it. God knows I tried.”

Memory suddenly detonated through me.

My mother asking if I was “moving too fast.”
Her coldness toward Iván.
The arguments.
The tension at dinners.

All this time I thought she was controlling.

Protective.

Difficult.

No.

She was terrified.

“I investigated him quietly,” she continued.
“But every time I prepared to tell you the truth…”

Her eyes closed briefly.

“You looked happy.”

The apartment blurred around me.

Because suddenly I understood the unbearable tragedy underneath everything:

My mother sacrificed certainty for my happiness.

And it destroyed us both.

Then her expression hardened.

“But somewhere along the way, something changed.”

I looked slowly toward Iván again.

He stared at the screen like a condemned man.

My mother spoke directly now.

“To his own surprise… Iván loved you.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

I felt my heart physically stutter.

“No,” I whispered automatically.

Because that would almost hurt more.

My mother nodded slowly on screen as if hearing me across time.

“Yes.
In his way.
Damaged.
Possessive.
Unhealthy.
But real.”

Tears slid silently down Iván’s face.

The sight stunned me.

I had never seen him cry without performance behind it.

Never.

My mother continued:

“That love became dangerous because it divided him.”

I looked at him.

Really looked.

And suddenly every contradiction inside him rearranged into something horrifyingly human.

The jealousy.
The control.
The panic.
The obsession.
The moments that almost seemed sincere.

Not innocence.

But conflict.

A weapon that accidentally grew a heart.

My mother inhaled slowly.

“If you are watching this now, then he eventually failed them somehow.”

I turned toward him fully.

“What did you do?”

Iván looked shattered.

Finally…

truly shattered.

Then he whispered the last thing I ever expected to hear:

“I was the one who hid the backup.”
