Part 3: The Secret Witness
Three weeks passed.
Laura focused on her daughters.
Isabel and Lucía filled every corner of her life with laughter, questions, and chaos.
For the first time in years, peace had settled over the house.
Then one rainy Tuesday morning, everything changed.
Valeria called again.
And when Laura heard her voice, she knew something was wrong.
“Laura, are you sitting down?”
Laura’s stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
There was a pause.
Then Valeria said:
“Someone wants to testify.”
Laura frowned.
“About what?”
“The divorce.”
“The accusations.”
“The affair.”
Laura felt her pulse quicken.
“Who?”
Valeria took a breath.
“Diego’s father.”
Silence.
Complete silence.
Laura nearly dropped the phone.
Ricardo Mendoza had never involved himself in family conflicts.
Unlike Dolores, he avoided drama.
For years he stayed quiet.
Invisible.
Watching.
Listening.
Saying almost nothing.
The idea that he wanted to testify was unbelievable.
“What does he want?”
Valeria’s answer sent chills down her spine.
“He says he knows why Diego really left.”
Two days later Laura sat across from Ricardo in Valeria’s office.
The older man looked exhausted.
Older than she remembered.
Ashamed.
For several moments nobody spoke.
Finally Ricardo looked at her.
“I owe you an apology.”
Laura remained silent.
“I should have stopped this long ago.”
His voice trembled.
“I thought Diego would come to his senses.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I was wrong.”
Laura folded her arms.
“What do you know?”
Ricardo reached into his jacket.
Then placed a thick envelope on the table.
Valeria immediately sat forward.
Laura stared at it.
“What is that?”
Ricardo looked sick.
“Proof.”
Inside were printed emails.
Bank transfers.
Hotel receipts.
Messages.
Hundreds of pages.
Laura’s hands began shaking.
The affair hadn’t started months before the pregnancy.
It had started nearly two years earlier.
Two years.
She felt physically ill.
Every anniversary.
Every family dinner.
Every vacation.
Every promise.
A lie.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
Not even close.
Halfway through the stack, Laura found a message from Diego.
Sent to Paula months before the vasectomy.
The words blurred through tears.
Then she forced herself to read them again.
And again.
And again.
Because they didn’t seem real.
“Once I get out of this marriage, everything will be easier.”
Another message followed.
“If she leaves first, I won’t lose as much financially.”
Laura’s chest tightened.
Then came the final message.
The one that made the entire room go silent.
“The pregnancy might solve everything.”
Laura stared.
Her blood turned cold.
Valeria looked horrified.
Ricardo covered his face.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody needed to.
The meaning was obvious.
Diego had viewed her pregnancy as an opportunity.
Not a blessing.
Not a family.
An opportunity.
A weapon.
A way out.
Tears rolled down Laura’s cheeks.
But something was different this time.
Years ago those tears would have been from heartbreak.
Now they came from clarity.
The final illusion had died.
The man she married no longer existed.
Maybe he never had.
Ricardo’s voice broke.
“I raised him.”
He stared at the floor.
“And somehow he became this.”
Laura looked at him.
For the first time she saw genuine regret.
Not excuses.
Not denial.
Regret.
“I tried talking to him.”
Ricardo swallowed.
“He wouldn’t listen.”
“Why come forward now?”
The old man lifted his eyes.
And Laura saw tears there.
“I met my granddaughters.”
His voice cracked.
“And I realized I couldn’t let them grow up believing lies.”
That night, Diego received notice that the new evidence would be entered into the court record.
Within an hour he was calling.
Then texting.
Then emailing.
Then calling again.
Laura ignored every message.
Until one arrived that made her stop.
It contained only five words.
Please let me explain.
Laura stared at the screen.
For a long time.
Then she typed a response.
The first direct response in months.
Explain to the judge.
Then she blocked the number.
Again.
Meanwhile, another storm was beginning.
Because Dolores had just learned what Ricardo had done.
And she was furious.
For forty years she had controlled every narrative in her family.
Every argument.
Every secret.
Every scandal.
Now her husband had broken ranks.
And exposed the truth.
That evening Ricardo arrived home to find his suitcase waiting beside the front door.
Dolores stood in the hallway.
Red-faced.
Shaking with rage.
“You betrayed your own son.”
Ricardo looked at the suitcase.
Then at his wife.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“I protected my granddaughters.”
For the first time in forty years…
Dolores had no answer.
Across town, Diego sat alone in his apartment.
The evidence spread across his table.
The messages.
The emails.
The proof.
He stared at them for hours.
Then finally buried his face in his hands.
Because for the first time…
He understood something terrifying.
Laura had forgiven herself.
The girls loved her.
The court believed her.
The truth supported her.
And now even his own father had chosen her side.
The story he had built was collapsing.
Piece by piece.
And there was nothing left to hide behind.
Nothing except the one secret he had never told anyone.
The secret that, if revealed, would destroy what remained of his reputation forever.
A secret so shocking that even Paula had never known it.
And soon…
Laura was about to discover it.
