When I asked Olivia to marry me, I thought the hardest part was over.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Her parents invited both of us to their home for a celebration dinner. It would be my first time meeting her mother.
Her father welcomed me with a warm handshake.
Her younger brother insisted on showing me old family photographs.
Everyone treated me like I already belonged.
Only one person was missing.
“Mom’s running late,” Olivia said. “She had to finish something at work.”
An hour later, the front door opened.
The room filled with cheerful voices.
Then…
Everything stopped.
The woman standing in the doorway dropped her purse onto the floor.
Her face drained of color.
She stared directly at me.
Not with confusion.
With recognition.
For several long seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she forced a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“So…”
She swallowed.
“You must be Daniel.”
I nodded slowly.
“It’s nice to finally meet you.”
She shook my hand.
Her fingers were ice cold.
The rest of dinner felt strangely uncomfortable.
She barely ate.
She barely spoke.
Every time I looked up, I caught her watching me.
When dessert was served, she quietly stood.
“Daniel,” she said.
“Would you mind helping me bring something in from the garage?”
Olivia smiled.
“Sure. He’ll help.”
I followed her outside.
The garage door closed behind us.
She turned toward me.
“You don’t remember me…”
It wasn’t a question.
I searched her face.
“No.”
She closed her eyes for a moment.
“Twenty-three years ago…”
“I was the emergency room nurse who stayed with you all night after the car accident.”
A forgotten memory flashed through my mind.
Bright lights.
Rain.
A woman holding my hand.
She continued quietly.
“Your parents never knew what I overheard that night.”
My heartbeat quickened.
“What are you talking about?”
She looked toward the closed garage door to make sure no one could hear.
Then she whispered the seven words that changed my life forever.
“The man who raised you isn’t your biological father.”
To be continued…
