Daniel called at 2:07 in the morning.
I was awake.
I no longer slept so much as lie still between phone calls.
The unknown number appeared.
I answered on speaker while the officer outside contacted Ruiz.
"Claire."
"You know they found him."
Silence.
"Owen."
Daniel breathed slowly.
"Yes."
"They found your watch."
Another silence.
"You buried it with him?"
"No."
"Then how did it get there?"
"Richard."
I almost laughed.
"Everything is Richard now."
"Because everything was Richard then."
"You lied to police about Owen."
"I was scared."
"You told them he was unstable."
"Richard told me what to say."
"You were thirty years old."
"Twenty-nine."
"As if that helps."
"It doesn't."
I sat on the edge of the bed.
"Did you kill Owen?"
"No."
"Did you see him die?"
Daniel did not answer.
"Daniel."
"Yes."
The word was barely audible.
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Tell me."
"He came to the yard."
"When?"
"The night he disappeared."
"To see you?"
"Me and Richard."
"Why?"
"He had copies of loan records."
"The trust properties."
"Yes."
"He was threatening to expose you."
"He was threatening Richard."
"And you?"
"I'd signed things."
"What things?"
"Loan documents."
"Fraudulent?"
"Yes."
At least he stopped pretending.
"What happened?"
"We argued."
"Then?"
"Owen said he was going to the police."
"Richard wouldn't let him."
Daniel breathed.
"I thought Dad was bluffing."
"What did he do?"
"He hit him."
"With what?"
"A steel pipe."
My stomach turned.
"Once?"
"No."
I closed my eyes.
"Was Owen alive afterward?"
"For a little while."
"Did you call an ambulance?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Richard took my phone."
The same pattern.
Phones.
Control communication.
Control the scene.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
His voice cracked.
"I stood there."
"You watched him die."
"I didn't know he would die."
"Did you help bury him?"
"No."
"Then the watch."
"Richard took it."
"Why?"
"Insurance."
I frowned.
"Against you?"
"Yes."
The brilliance of it was horrifying.
Richard had buried Daniel's engraved watch beside Owen's body.
If the grave was ever found, Daniel could be implicated.
A leash underground.
"You knew?"
"Not until years later."
"How?"
"Richard told me."
"When?"
"After Rebecca."
My stomach tightened.
"He used Owen to keep you quiet about Rebecca."
"Yes."
"So what happened to Rebecca?"
Daniel went silent.
"Did you watch that too?"
"No."
"Did you help?"
"No."
"Then why were you afraid?"
"Because I knew what Richard was capable of."
"And still left Rebecca with him."
Silence.
That was answer enough.
Ruiz arrived while Daniel remained on the line.
She entered quietly and sat beside me.
I continued.
"Why did Richard keep saving you?"
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You think it was saving?"
"You got money. Alibis. Problems disappeared."
"And every time he owned more of me."
"That doesn't make you innocent."
"I know."
For once, no defense followed.
"What happened after Owen died?"
"Richard told me to go home."
"And?"
"He handled the body."
"Alone?"
"I don't know."
"Did Thomas help?"
"No."
"You keep trying to make me suspicious of Thomas."
"Because Thomas knew more than he admitted."
"Knowing isn't killing."
"No."
"Did Thomas know about Owen?"
"Not then."
Ruiz wrote something and pushed the paper toward me.
ASK WHERE RICHARD IS.
"Where's your father?"
"I don't know."
"Last time you saw him?"
"The yard."
"You said he found you near the river."
"He did."
"Then you went to the yard."
"Yes."
"What happened?"
"He wanted me to leave with him."
"Where?"
"House 14."
"Why?"
"To wait."
"For what?"
"For things to calm down."
"They weren't going to."
"I know."
"Then?"
"I told him I was done."
"With what?"
"Everything."
I almost laughed again.
Daniel had discovered morality only after his plan failed.
"He hit you."
"Yes."
"The blood in the truck."
"Yes."
"How did you get away?"
"I waited until he went into the office."
"Then?"
"Took another vehicle."
"What vehicle?"
"Old company van."
"Police saw Richard driving a white van."
"Different one."
Ruiz immediately texted someone.
"Where is it?"
"I abandoned it."
"Where?"
Daniel gave an address near an industrial park.
"Where are you now?"
"No."
"Why keep hiding?"
"Because if I surrender, Richard knows exactly where I am."
"Police can protect you."
"Like they protected Owen?"
"That was thirteen years ago."
"Richard still has people."
"What people?"
"Employees. Former employees. People who owe him."
Ruiz wrote again.
NAMES.
"Give us names."
"I don't know who he still controls."
"Then you're useless."
Daniel inhaled sharply.
"Claire."
"No. You call because you're afraid. You tell half a truth. Then you disappear again. Meanwhile Noah wakes up asking whether his father loves him."
Silence.
I continued before anger failed me.
"You want protection? Earn it. Tell them everything."
"I can't fix what I did."
"No."
"But I can stop Richard."
"Then start."
Daniel was silent for almost twenty seconds.
"There's a safe."
"Where?"
"House 14."
"Police searched the building."
"Not the real safe."
Ruiz leaned forward.
"Where is it?"
"Under the workshop floor."
"What's inside?"
"Records."
"What records?"
"Everything Richard keeps on people."
"Blackmail?"
"Insurance."
The word again.
Richard insured loyalty with evidence.
"How do you open it?"
"Key and combination."
"The red key?"
"Yes."
"Combination?"
Daniel gave six digits.
Ruiz left immediately, already calling officers.
I remained with Daniel.
"What will they find?"
"Copies of loans. Payoffs. Owen."
"Rebecca?"
A pause.
"Yes."
My skin went cold.
"What about Rebecca?"
"I don't know exactly."
"Lie."
"I've never opened everything."
"But you've seen some."
"Yes."
"What?"
"A letter."
"From her?"
"No."
"From whom?"
"Richard."
"To who?"
"Me."
My throat tightened.
"What did it say?"
"That if I ever talked about the fire, he'd give police the watch and tell them I killed Owen."
The underground leash.
"Anything proving Richard started the fire?"
"I don't know."
"Then why keep Rebecca's records?"
"Because Dad keeps everything."
"Even murder."
Daniel did not answer.
A notification appeared on Ruiz's shared case line.
Officers had reached House 14.
They located the concealed floor panel.
The red key recovered from Richard's office opened the first lock.
The combination opened the safe.
Inside were folders.
Dozens.
Names.
Businesses.
Loans.
Photographs.
Copies of identification.
Daniel.
Owen.
Rebecca.
Thomas.
Others.
Richard had built an archive of leverage.
Ruiz called me from the property.
"We're processing it."
"Rebecca?"
"There's a folder."
"Open it."
"We have procedures."
"Elena."
"I know."
"What about Owen?"
"Also a folder."
"And Daniel?"
"Several."
"Anything about me?"
A pause.
"Yes."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
"A folder labeled Claire."
I closed my eyes.
Richard had a file on me.
A man I saw at holidays.
A man who gave Noah birthday money.
A man who complained about my coffee.
"How long?"
"Some documents are years old."
"What documents?"
"Financial records. Property information."
"Why?"
"We'll determine that."
"Is Noah there too?"
Another pause.
"Yes."
The answer hurt worse.
A folder with my son's name.
"What's inside?"
"We haven't fully reviewed it."
Daniel remained connected.
He heard.
"Claire."
I had forgotten he was there.
"You knew?"
"Not about your folder."
"Noah's?"
"I knew Dad kept trust records."
"That's not what I asked."
"I knew there was a file."
My anger became strangely calm.
"You brought our child into a system you already knew was built on blackmail."
"I thought I could control it."
"You have never controlled anything."
The line went quiet.
Then Daniel said, "You're right."
Before I could respond, a sound came from his end.
A door.
Daniel stopped breathing.
"What?"
No answer.
"Daniel?"
Ruiz heard it too.
A faint metallic scrape.
Then footsteps.
Daniel whispered, "Someone's here."
"Where are you?"
No answer.
"Tell us."
Another sound.
Glass breaking.
Daniel cursed.
Ruiz shouted into the phone.
"Daniel, give us your location now."
He gave an address.
A vacant renovation property west of town.
Ruiz relayed it immediately.
Then Daniel said, "He's inside."
"Richard?"
"I don't know."
A heavy impact came through the phone.
Daniel moved.
His breathing became ragged.
"Lock yourself somewhere," Ruiz ordered.
"No lock."
"Get out if you can."
A voice sounded faintly in the background.
Male.
I could not understand the words.
Daniel did.
"No."
His voice changed.
"It's not Richard."
"Who?"
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered a name.
"Thomas."
The call disconnected.
