The lights went out.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The house that had once been filled with my childhood memories suddenly felt like a place we had never known.
A place that had been waiting.
Detective Harper immediately pulled out her flashlight.
“Everyone stay together.”
But Clara wasn’t listening.
She was staring at the recorder.
At the place where my mother’s voice had disappeared.
“Daniel knows,” she whispered.
I grabbed her arm.
“Clara.”
She looked at me.
“He knows everything.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“We don’t know that.”
But even as I said it, I knew I was trying to convince myself.
Because Daniel had always been one step ahead.
The missing daughter.
The hidden identity.
The secret box.
Nora.
He had found every secret eventually.
Then we heard it.
A sound from upstairs.
A floorboard.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was inside the house.
Detective Harper raised her weapon.
“Police! Show yourself!”
No answer.
Another step.
Then another.
Clara grabbed my hand.
“Sarah…”
I could hear the fear in her voice.
Not fear for herself.
Fear for Nora.
A figure appeared at the top of the stairs.
For one second, my heart stopped.
Because I thought it was him.
Daniel.
But it wasn’t.
It was an older man.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A face full of regret.
He slowly raised his hands.
“I’m not here to hurt you.”
Detective Harper kept her weapon pointed.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at Clara.
And tears filled his eyes.
“My name is Michael Cross.”
Clara froze.
“No.”
The man swallowed.
“I’m Daniel’s father.”
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
“You’re supposed to be dead,” Clara whispered.
Michael looked down.
“I know.”
My stomach tightened.
Another person who was supposed to be dead.
Another lie.
Another secret.
“Why are you here?” Detective Harper asked.
Michael looked at the box on the table.
“Because you finally found the truth.”
He walked slowly downstairs.
“I spent ten years trying to undo what my son did.”
Clara stepped forward.
“You knew?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The pain on his face looked real.
“I knew what Daniel was.”
My sister’s voice shook.
“Then why didn’t you stop him?”
Michael looked at her.
“Because I was a coward.”
The words landed heavily.
“I spent years protecting my family name instead of protecting innocent people.”
He looked at the photograph.
“I helped create a monster.”
I felt anger rise.
“You knew he hurt women?”
Michael nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing?”
“I tried.”
He looked broken.
“But Daniel was smarter than I was. He covered everything. He made people believe his victims were unstable.”
Clara’s face hardened.
“And my mother?”
Michael looked at her.
“Your mother was the only person who believed you.”
I looked at the photograph.
“Then why was she standing beside Daniel?”
Michael took a deep breath.
“Because she was pretending.”
Everyone froze.
“She knew Daniel was watching her.”
Michael continued.
“She knew if she acted like she hated him, he would become suspicious.”
Clara covered her mouth.
“She was spying on him.”
“Yes.”
Michael nodded.
“Your mother spent ten years collecting evidence.”
He looked at the folder.
“That project file was not about Clara.”
He pointed at the documents.
“It was about Daniel.”
Detective Harper opened the folder again.
Inside were pages and pages of names.
Women.
Dates.
Locations.
Evidence.
A decade of secrets.
My mother had not been hiding the truth.
She had been building a case.
Then Michael said something that made all of us stop.
“There is one thing you still don’t know.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He stared at Clara.
“Nora.”
Clara immediately stepped forward.
“What about my daughter?”
Michael’s expression changed.
“She was never Daniel’s child.”
Clara went pale.
“I know.”
“No.”
Michael shook his head.
“You don’t.”
The room became silent.
“Nora was born from the man Daniel was trying to destroy.”
I felt confused.
“What does that mean?”
Michael looked at Clara.
“Tell her.”
Clara looked at the floor.
And for the first time in all these days…
I saw shame on her face.
“Sarah…”
My heart sank.
“What?”
She whispered:
“Daniel wasn’t the only person involved that night.”
I felt cold.
“What are you saying?”
Clara looked at me.
“Nora’s real father is someone we both knew.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who?”
Before Clara could answer…
my phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Again.
Detective Harper looked at me.
“Answer it.”
I did.
A little girl’s voice came through.
“Mommy?”
Clara collapsed.
“Nora!”
But before we could speak, another voice came on the line.
A man.
Calm.
Controlled.
Daniel.
“You finally found the truth.”
Clara grabbed the phone.
“Where is my daughter?”
Daniel laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand.”
“Let her go!”
“You think I wanted Nora?”
A pause.
“I wanted what she represents.”
My hand tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel answered:
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
His voice lowered.
“That everything Clara told you was a lie.”
The line went silent.
Then Daniel said:
“Come alone, Clara.”
“No.”
“If you want your daughter back…”
A pause.
“You need to hear who Nora’s father really is.”
The call ended.
Everyone looked at Clara.
She looked terrified.
Because after ten years of running…
after everything we had uncovered…
there was still one secret left.
The secret that started it all.
And somehow…
it was connected to Nora.
