PART 1 – I Asked My Wife Why She Believed I Was Losing Our Money, and Her Answer Made Me Question Everything

I had never expected to hear my wife explain that she believed I was hiding a gambling problem.

Not at sixty-nine.

Not after everything I had worked for.

And certainly not because of something her son had told her.

I looked at Pam.

She looked close to tears.

I wanted to understand how we had reached this point.

Not just what she believed.

Who had convinced her.

And why.

“Pam, did you really take his word for it?”

She struggled to answer.

I could see that she was upset.

But being upset didn't make the accusation disappear.

She had believed something serious about me.

Something that could change how she saw every decision I made.

“I was worried about you, Gary.”

I listened.

“Jordan said you were in trouble. He made it sound like you couldn't stop gambling.”

I watched her face.

“He said you were embarrassed about it. That you didn't want me finding out how bad things had become.”

There it was.

The story she had accepted.

Not something she had witnessed.

Not something I had admitted.

Something Jordan had told her.

I looked away for a moment.

I needed to keep my voice steady.

Pam continued.

“He said the money you owed was growing. He thought you might lose everything if it came out.”

Everything.

That was the word that stayed with me.

I had spent years working with property and storage lots.

I knew what it meant to build something valuable.

I also knew what it meant to put your trust in people.

Those were two different things.

And I was beginning to understand that I had been treating them as if they were the same.

Pam seemed to believe she had been protecting me.

That was what hurt.

She thought she was helping her husband.

Yet she had accepted her son's explanation before hearing mine.

I wanted to ask her how long she had believed it.

I wanted to know exactly what Jordan had said.

But there was another reason I couldn't simply dismiss the conversation.

I had recently signed an agreement that changed my financial circumstances.

A very large agreement.

One Pam didn't know about yet.

And her belief that I was losing everything was almost impossible to square with what had actually happened.

I kept that information to myself.

For the moment, I needed to know where the gambling story had started.

I looked at Jordan.

He was sitting there while his mother struggled to explain herself.

“Jordan, you told Pam I was gambling while I was in Oklahoma?”

I waited.

He didn't offer much.

“Somebody mentioned it.”

That was not an answer.

Not a real one.

I asked him who.

He moved in his chair.

Then he said he couldn't recall the person.

I stared at him.

A claim serious enough to frighten his mother.

Serious enough to make her believe I was hiding debts.

And he couldn't identify the person who supposedly told him.

I didn't know what to believe about Jordan anymore.

But I knew one thing.

Before I discussed my money with either of them, I wanted the truth about that accusation.
