The confrontation did not happen according to the plan Anna had rehearsed.
Police wanted distance. Malik wanted patience. Clare wanted Anna nowhere near Dererick.
But Dererick returned unexpectedly while Anna, accompanied by Clare and Peterson, was retrieving documents investigators had requested.
He entered the kitchen and stopped when he saw them.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then Dererick smiled.
It was the same polite expression Anna had watched him use with neighbors, colleagues, waiters, and strangers. Seeing it now felt almost obscene.
He asked whether Anna had finished embarrassing herself.
She did not answer the insult.
Instead, she placed several printed stills on the counter.
One showed Dererick beside their bed wearing gloves.
Another showed the camera.
A third captured a vial near Anna’s cup.
Dererick’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
It was enough.
He demanded to know where she had obtained the images.
Anna told him copies existed in multiple locations and had already been supplied to investigators.
She mentioned the notebook, the attic folder, the pseudonym, the coded address, and the correspondence.
Dererick tried denial first.
He claimed the camera monitored sleep. He called the substances harmless research materials. He suggested Anna had misunderstood private notes and allowed Clare to inflame her suspicions.
Clare said nothing.
Her silence deprived him of the argument he wanted.
Anna connected the flash drive to the television.
Footage appeared.
Dererick watched himself enter the bedroom in gloves.
He watched himself position the camera.
He watched himself prepare a vial.
The recording included enough of his whispered commentary to destroy the innocent explanation.
Peterson turned away from the screen.
Dererick’s composure finally broke.
He accused Anna of destroying their marriage and manufacturing a public spectacle. He moved toward the laptop.
Clare stepped between him and the evidence.
Anna told him the machine no longer mattered.
Everything had been copied.
Sirens sounded outside.
Dererick’s anger shifted instantly into calculation.
When officers entered, he adopted a quieter voice and described his actions as research that Anna had misinterpreted.
Detective Morales asked whether participants had consented.
Dererick did not answer directly.
Investigators secured the computer, camera equipment, notebook, and medical supplies.
Anna supplied the list of names she had identified.
Peterson gave his observations and photographs.
Clare described the medical significance of the records without exaggerating what she could not prove.
Dererick was taken into custody pending further investigation.
At the doorway he looked back at Anna.
She expected fury.
Instead she saw calculation, as if even then he were searching for another version of events that might restore his control.
The door closed behind him.
Anna sat down because her knees would no longer support her.
There was no triumph.
Only release, grief, and the strange silence left when a danger that has occupied every thought is suddenly removed from the room.
Then Detective Morales returned from the study carrying another storage device.
Investigators had found it hidden behind a drawer.
Its contents, he warned Anna, might reveal far more victims than anyone had yet identified.
