People moved between tables freely, carrying photographs, coffee cups, and stories that had waited decades for an audience.
Someone asked for memories of kindnesses nobody had acknowledged at the time.
Hands rose slowly.
A woman remembered receiving anonymous grocery money after her father lost his job. A former athlete confessed that another student had secretly tutored him through mathematics.
Then Marianne recalled a fundraiser Wilma and Bernadette had once helped organize for a classmate facing addiction treatment.
Neither woman had remembered the event clearly.
They looked at each other, astonished that a shared act of generosity had survived in someone else’s memory after disappearing from their own.
The discovery shifted something fundamental.
Their relationship had contained cruelty and competition, but those were not its only truths.
Bernadette reached for the apron tie at Wilma’s back. “Hold still.”
The stitching had loosened. Bernadette repaired the knot carefully, an ordinary gesture that made Wilma unexpectedly emotional.
“There,” Bernadette said. “I suppose I owe the apron that much.”
Wilma smiled. “It has survived worse.”
Near closing time, Mr. Prashad approached them with a proposal.
The hotel chain had been discussing outreach to regional shelters. They needed linens, training, supply systems, and people capable of coordinating volunteers.
He believed Delacroix Linen Services could handle the practical side.
Then he looked at Bernadette. Her organizational ability and community contacts could provide the other half.
“You’re asking us to work together?” Bernadette said.
Mr. Prashad smiled. “I watched you do it tonight.”
Wilma and Bernadette exchanged a look that would once have signaled battle.
“Yes,” Wilma said. Bernadette answered at the same moment. Neither woman laughed until they realized they had agreed together.
